I got into this business because I love challenges; each brief was a new challenge to be solved. In my early days, it was fairly straightforward: write pages of headlines or scripts and think of interesting ways to present ideas in visually compelling ways.
As the industry has evolved, I’ve found new challenges that are equally rewarding. I have worked on, and managed teams for, clients in a variety of industries. I co-led one small creative department which my partner and I built into a fully integrated department – the first for that agency. I’ve worked on some of the largest brands in the world, in one case overseeing the shift from mostly traditional media to overwhelmingly digital.
I’ve also developed a real appreciation for strategy and brand-building, and found that I have a good head for it. This includes crafting and defining brand strategy as well as making the work that comes out of it. It’s my belief that the more our industry relies on tech, the more important it is that we remain sharply focused on brand strategy and representing a brand’s voice.
Making great work is still fundamentally a creative process. Sometimes it comes quickly, sometimes less so. It certainly helps me to have had those years of experience that I can bring to every project. The experience to know, sometimes, which roads to go down and which to avoid. The experience to know to shut up and listen to what others are saying, because gems of wisdom are hidden everywhere.
I began my advertising career in the Boston area, where I also grew up, eventually moving to New York City where I currently live. I like to travel, play tennis, scuba dive, ski, and take pictures of stuff, and I can move each of my eyes independently.
